Fantasy Games For The Winter

It’s the time of the year again…when the sun goes early to bed and gamers like to curl up in the sofa (or comfy chair) and play something grindy. Here’s my lineup:

Dragon Age: Origins

Copyright BioWare 2009

Some say this is the spiritual sequel of Baldur’s Gate 2, like Bioshock was the sequel of System Shock 2. My boss started talking about this back in April, which ended up with me pre-ordering it from Steam.

There’s also a Dragon Age-flash game that’ll give players more story/lore before playing DA:O.

League of Legends

This DOTA-clone of a game is a perfectly awesome game for the winter. A game takes about 40-60 minutes to finish, and you’ve got a leveling system that’ll make your champions (heroes) better in-game.

Also, it’s completely free and the only thing you can spend money on, is champion skins (that’ll be limited), runes and such. Though for the hardcore player you can get these by just playing the game.

I’m playing the european version of LOL. Max ms I’ve had is 22.5 (20 stable)!

We’re all waiting on Diablo III. Before D3 is released (my guess is 2011) there’s Torchligt – a singleplayer game that bears much resemblance to the Diablo-games. I’ve just played it for about two hours or so, and I didn’t notice the time pass by!

You can get it @ Steam for 15,99€. It’s singlerplayer-only, but the developers have announced they’ll work it into a MMO later next year or so.

If you’ve got one, what’s your lineup?

  1. Borderlands is also worth a look. A near perfect mix of fps gameplay and action rpg system. Only thing is that it is a game you need to play mulitplayer with people you know. Singleplayer can get a bit monotonous, and mulitplayer with strangers will almost certainly lead to drama over ninja-looting. But if you can get a few people you know together, it is among the most fun multiplayer experiences I’ve had this year. There are a few drawbacks, like the length and the way quest sharing works in multiplayer (every player needs to be exactly the same point in storyline for everyone to be able to advance, meaning that you can’t ever play you character without you group of friends if you plan to level together).

I do recommend it though. Great artstyle, hundreds (maybe thousands) of truly unique weapons, cheesy as hell humor and fights as intense as in the awesomely great Serious Sam SE.

Sounds like someone wants more co-op partners, eh? If there was a way to get the Steam-games for $ instead of €. The friggin $1 = 1€ policy Steam got is kinda ruining my account balance.

I’ve also bought L4D2, so I’ll be running around screaming/shooting zombies the weeks after release. Though I do have to prepare for the final exams as well…

  3. Nah, I’ve played through it with three of my aoc guildies. I have bought l4d3 as well, so I might join you in the carnage when that gets released.

  4. l4d2 of course

  5. When the going gets tough, I play with myself.

Ah, you’re the singleplayer kind of type? I just realised I got Dragon Age: Origins preloaded at home right now, and I’m soon finished with my last java assignment before x-mas.

Sjukheit: I’ll get a microphone headset as well. Then I can scream like a little girl while pew-pew’ing around me.

  7. I tried out torchlight. That game is basically diablo with new skin. Which is awesome. Cant remember last single player game that kept me ingame that long.

  8. A bunch of fucking gay games.

  9. koew:

I assume you mean gay as in funny and entertaining as hell? If not, there’s only one of the games that’s (partly) gay, and it’s Dragon Age
