Kjartan: A swift blow to the head is as fast and painfull/-less as a bullet. (It's so fast it doesn't make sense to talk about pain.) The animals in the pictures above are already dead, from a quick blow to the head. This is called bludgeoning.

This is the same type of slaughter we do on pigs and cattle as well (only with a bolt instead). What's really your problem here?

Also, what would you call your argument that Koew should volunteer to be bludgeoned and skinned? I call that immature. But if I were to be skinned, I sure as hell would want to be bludgeoned prior to the event..

I think you are completely misunderstanding and underestimating the post you're commenting to. It's called irony, and it works. Humour is our first line of defence against the prospect of death. Death is not cruel it just is what it is. Showing pictures of slaughter is educational. It is important for people to know where meat comes from. Killing animals for sustenance is not cruel either. Would you rather be blind-sided and bludgeoned by a human hunter or eaten alive by a killer whale? How many seals reach a natural death? I'd guess close to zero.

I didn't dig deeply at all. I used what I thought was a readily apparent example. I suppose I was trying to make a point about respect. A good hunter doesn't let his prey suffer. A good shot through the heart, hopefully on the first shot, and the animal will die very quickly. with the minimum of suffering. From what I've seen with the baby seals, they don't die nearly as quickly as they could or with the minimum of suffering; and, in fact are not uncommonly still alive when they are skinned. This is a needless cruelty which repetition of killing brings out in one. One ceases to care once they've killed a certain number of times. Now, I understand shooting the animal would render it's skin valueless, and I can't think of a reasonably inexpensive, realistic alternative which would also be safe for the "hunters." The closest would be to simply use tranquilizer guns, where the darts were loaded with a quantity of tranquilizer that would be lethal to the seals. This would raise costs a bit, but would seem, to me, to be a better alternative. However, if the meat is to be eaten, then I'm not sure this would be realistic.

I'm not opposed to eating whale or seal if I was offered it, I'm not a vegetarian. I don't like to see pointless suffering however. I particularly don't like to see pointless suffering made light of, I think it trivializes us all. The "small soul" comment was not literal, but a figure of speech. I don't have any idea if there's an afterlife or if we have souls or not. We have no evidence one way or the other, so I don't believe that we do, nor do I believe that we don't, and would be picking one or the other purely on the basis of emotion, since logic dictates neither.

Perhaps you feel that the other side in this issue over-reacts and makes seal "hunters" and whalers into monsters? So, you feel the need to respond in kind? I can understand the desire to do that. It's difficult to have a rational discussion of any sort these days, because people jump to hyperbole so quickly. However, with that said, I think it's important not to trivialize loss of life and suffering (particularly human, or short of that, mammalian, as they are far more intelligent and cognizant than pretty much any other form of life on this planet). I think that is a dangerous road to go down for our own good as well as the good of our children. Look at Africa. There's no great respect for life in the Congo, should we model ourselves after such a culture? I'm not against whaling and sealing, but I think that it ought to be done humanely, as far as possible. I realize that cheapness prevents people from looking very far in that direction . . . at the very least, I think that we ought never to lose our sense of respect for and the cognizance of the dignity of life, even if it is only a seal or a whale.

Correct: former military.

Kjartan is a normal Scandinavian name, although I am American.

You really dug deep to write that reply, didn't you Kjartan? Well, here's my answers:

- I wouldn't be okay if it was just for my skin. If my meat was as delicous and wild as seals' meat, then the matter would've been totally different. If you haven't tried it, you don't know shit. Whales and seals live a better life in the wild than our mass production cattle (think: burgers/steaks/bacon).

- If a more intelligent (and violent?) alien species landed on our planet, I'm not sure my first concern would be whether or not my parents were killed. How could we even defend ourselves when we're busy fighting each other? Hell, you're a military guy (or was); did you ever practice alien invasion defence? No? I rest my case.

- I don't believe in souls, so having a small / tiny / pixel-sized one doesn't matter to me. Sorry for not sharing your beliefs, Kjartan. I guess your soul is a XXL?

- I really don't think "most such" people understand how the Internet works either, but then again your name is Kjartan and you're cool with that?

Alright, stay frosty.

I'm just curious. If you were being bludgeoned to death for your skin, would you be ok with that?

If the answer is yes, step up to the plate. Volunteer to be bludgeoned. Otherwise you're recommending dishing out what you yourself cannot take.

You may justify it by saying we're higher on the food chain. Well, will you be the first to say that it's fine for you or your mom or your dad to be bludgeoned if a more intelligent alien species lands on our planet?

Being callous doesn't make one "macho." Killing is easy. I have been in a position in life to experience both hunting and military killing. I assure you, nothing could be easier. Being an internet "tough guy" that can laugh at pictures/videos of people and/or animals being killed just means that you're very immature, nothing else. It means that you have a small soul. By doing so, you're making it ok for everyone else to "lol" at a video of you being skinned alive on the web . . . go ahead and volunteer, I'll be the first to "lol" at your suffering, and at your corpse, if you like. I suppose that's your own ethical choice. Otherwise, try to represent yourself with a little more maturity.

I really don't think most such people understand how much they belittle themselves with their mockery.

Oh, and by the way. This isnt "The Wild."
This is modern day. We have plenty of resources to choose from that doesnt involve clubbing animals on the head.
And it's ignorant assholes like you that I really hope burn in hell.

most of you guys are pretty damn ignorant. They club them on the head to protect the fur. They dont eat them (normally) they just leave the baby seals' naked dead bodies lying on the ice. All so canada's olympic team can integrate seal fur into their uniforms. You need a jacket? Ever heard of cotton? Yeah. pretty handy. Quit being divas and wear something that doesnt require a life to be taken for you to wear it. They dont even get that much money for it.

I dont eat meat. Any meat. And yeah, I do realize that we need protien to survive, but animal meat isnt the only way to find it, you can find it in peanuts, tofu, beans, and alot of other places.

Personally, I DO beleive that part of the reason that animals are put on earth is for our consumption and survival, but we are going about it completely the wrong way. Animals are living creatures and we are using them for our food and protection, and I beleive that they should be atleast treated with dignity and respect. Imagine there is another species on this planet, far more intelligent than we. Imagine being shackled by your ankles, shocked in your anus or genitals, having your throat slit, being boiled alive, being skinned from neck to ankles alive, all because they are too much of cheap bastards to use a little bit more of money to kill us in a humane way. Now imagine you cant do anything about it.

Well, we're the cheap bastards in this fucked up scenario. I don't want to go down in history as the asshole generation that helped destroy all life on earth.

Yeah. Meat industry is very pollutant. They dump all the waste and dead bodies in the rivers and the ocean, the meat industry causes more pollution than all the cars in the world combined. Going vegitarian or vegan is even more environmentally friendly than buying a hybrid car.

Humane is basically not treating them like total shit, and giving them a quick and painless death.
Learn your shit you stupid dick-fucks.

I propose a new law on koew.net, which says the following: "If you haven't tried whale or seal, you don't know shit.".

All in favor: don't say shit, because this law is awesome. All against: GTFO.
