I think you are completely misunderstanding and underestimating the post you’re commenting to. It’s called irony, and it works. Humour is our first line of defence against the prospect of death. Death is not cruel it just is what it is. Showing pictures of slaughter is educational. It is important for people to know where meat comes from. Killing animals for sustenance is not cruel either. Would you rather be blind-sided and bludgeoned by a human hunter or eaten alive by a killer whale? How many seals reach a natural death? I’d guess close to zero.

I’m not opposed to eating whale or seal if I was offered it, I’m not a vegetarian. I don’t like to see pointless suffering however. I particularly don’t like to see pointless suffering made light of, I think it trivializes us all. The “small soul” comment was not literal, but a figure of speech. I don’t have any idea if there’s an afterlife or if we have souls or not. We have no evidence one way or the other, so I don’t believe that we do, nor do I believe that we don’t, and would be picking one or the other purely on the basis of emotion, since logic dictates neither.

Perhaps you feel that the other side in this issue over-reacts and makes seal “hunters” and whalers into monsters? So, you feel the need to respond in kind? I can understand the desire to do that. It’s difficult to have a rational discussion of any sort these days, because people jump to hyperbole so quickly. However, with that said, I think it’s important not to trivialize loss of life and suffering (particularly human, or short of that, mammalian, as they are far more intelligent and cognizant than pretty much any other form of life on this planet). I think that is a dangerous road to go down for our own good as well as the good of our children. Look at Africa. There’s no great respect for life in the Congo, should we model ourselves after such a culture? I’m not against whaling and sealing, but I think that it ought to be done humanely, as far as possible. I realize that cheapness prevents people from looking very far in that direction . . . at the very least, I think that we ought never to lose our sense of respect for and the cognizance of the dignity of life, even if it is only a seal or a whale.

- I wouldn’t be okay if it was just for my skin. If my meat was as delicous and wild as seals’ meat, then the matter would’ve been totally different. If you haven’t tried it, you don’t know shit. - If a more intelligent (and violent?) alien species landed on our planet, I’m not sure my first concern would be whether or not my parents were killed. Being callous doesn’t make one “macho.” Killing is easy. I have been in a position in life to experience both hunting and military killing. I assure you, nothing could be easier. I dont eat meat. Any meat. And yeah, I do realize that we need protien to survive, but animal meat isnt the only way to find it, you can find it in peanuts, tofu, beans, and alot of other places.

Personally, I DO beleive that part of the reason that animals are put on earth is for our consumption and survival, but we are going about it completely the wrong way. Animals are living creatures and we are using them for our food and protection, and I beleive that they should be atleast treated with dignity and respect. Imagine there is another species on this planet, far more intelligent than we. Imagine being shackled by your ankles, shocked in your anus or genitals, having your throat slit, being boiled alive, being skinned from neck to ankles alive, all because they are too much of cheap bastards to use a little bit more of money to kill us in a humane way. Now imagine you cant do anything about it.

Yeah. Meat industry is very pollutant. They dump all the waste and dead bodies in the rivers and the ocean, the meat industry causes more pollution than all the cars in the world combined. Going vegitarian or vegan is even more environmentally friendly than buying a hybrid car.

Humane is basically not treating them like total shit, and giving them a quick and painless death.
