More Tom Waits in 2008?

Well, not really. But there’s somewhat of a poor? substitute: Southside Johnny with the Labamba Big Band. They’re going to play at the Nokia Theater in New York! I quote:

Legendary Jersey rocker Southside Johnny recently released Grapefruit Moon: The Songs of Tom Waits, a 12 song, big band tribute to some of Tom’s greatest work.

On October 24th, Southside Johnny and the La Bamba Big Band will perform the tracks live at the Nokia Theater as part of the CMJ Marathon. For more information, please click here.

That might be a waste of time for some, but I believe I’ll have to get my roommate to join me for a big band extravaganza in New York! Check out some samples at Southside Johnny’s homepage.

Grapefruit Moon: The Songs of Tom Waits:

  1. Yesterday is Here
  2. Down, Down, Down
  3. Walk Away
  4. Please Call Me, Baby
  5. Grapefruit Moon
  6. All the Time in the World
  7. Tango Till They’re Sore
  8. Johnsburg, Illinois
  9. New Coat of Paint
  10. Shiver Me Timbers
  11. Dead and Lovely
  12. Temptation

Yeah, I know. Still I’m not sure if my roommate wanted to go. Didn’t quite sound as his thing, I believe. Maybe I’ll order a ticket, then get intoxicated on whisky and be the one guy in the audience who can’t stop singing along. Maybe not.

I am secretly hoping that Waits himself would bless the band with a visit, and do a little medley on the piano for us.

I won’t be at the concert, due to two hand-in tasks at school, it costs money, but most of all is that you just can’t replace Tom Waits with such a lesser band. I’d probably feel raped and ashamed of myself after the concert.

How can you compete with this? I don’t know…
