Opera Unite Forces Opera Usage (Updated)

Posted on June 16th, 2009 - 6:46 pm - 3 comments

Opera Unite was recently published as a “a Web server on the Web browser”. What will it do to the current Browser Wars?

If you haven’t read about Opera Unite, I suggest reading:

Some thoughts and concerns about Opera Unite:

File sharing

They haven’t specified file sharing on what level. I mean, are we talking about the ability to share whole folders, tons of gigabytes?

Still I don’t clearly see why I would need to share the files from my own “browser-server” when I could more or less mail the files, or upload them.

And if not, there’s alot of torrents around the web…

Chatting

Why not use an independant chat client? Why should users need to open their browsers in order to chat?

And what if you just want to check your e-mail quick, or a message board?

Gaming

I’ve got a gaming platform for PC: Steam. It works and it’s good. Also, I see no reason to why I should want to leave my browser open while playing a game.

And if you’re already using MSN Messenger, you can play against your friends there.

Humoruos Slashdot quotes

Yo dawg, I heard you like surfing, so we put a web server in your browser so you can surf while your surf!

Did they just slap a GUI on Emacs?

*Runs away*

All in all, I see this just as another step to make Opera users forced to their browser in order to communicate to each other. Any thoughts? Please share.

  1. This sounds like a “feature” the new generation of bubblegum chewing teens will endorse. Myself? I prefer (S)FTP or simply gmail.

  2. I mean, if you can’t work it in CLI over SSH, it’s simply not worth doing.

Or even use Google Wave, since it’s supposed to work on all browsers. Why should users be forced to use one specific browser? Yes, Internet Explorer, I’m talking to you as well!
